The owners of Wagener's only floral shop recently sold the business so they can phase into their new roles as grandparents.
Tony and Gale Kirkland, the owners of The Petal Shoppe, handed over the keys on Feb. 1 after nearly a decade of service. Tony said the shop opened in February 2005 and is the only floral shop on that side of Aiken County.
When asked why they decided to sell the shop, Tony said he and his wife want to have a better opportunity to spend time with their grandkids.
“We have grandchildren on the way and we're both still working, so we wanted to free up some of our time,” he said.
While they both enjoyed their time running the shop, Tony said neither he nor his wife were familiar with the trade when they opened. Both relied on the expertise of a local floral designer when they opened, who basically taught the two everything they know about the business.
In looking for a buyer, the Kirklands eventually settled on part-time employee Heidi Leaden. Tony said Leaden has been a faithful part of the shop for about five years and making her the owner was the best choice.
“We had been looking for someone to sell to and we wanted someone who was compatible and who could continue the quality service we provided,” he explained. “Heidi certainly fit that mold, and we know she'll do a great job.”
Leaden said she is equally excited about the transition. In taking over as owner, Leaden will be able to continue using her certificate in floral design.
“I started working for the Kirklands during Valentine's Day weekend years ago, and I've really enjoyed my time here,” she said. “The Kirklands served the community ... beautifully and I just want to continue that legacy.”
Tony added, “We really enjoyed meeting the public, providing arrangements for weddings and being able to comfort people during their time of loss. Now, we just ask the community to continue to support Heidi as she moves on with the shop's legacy.”
The Petal Shoppe is located 124 Earle St. in Wagener.
