Drug Arrests Made in Wagener

The Wagener Police Department (WPD) and Aiken County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) made two substantial arrests this week in Wagener in the war against drugs.  WPD Lieutenant Hill and ACSO Deputy Smith made an arrest within the town limits on Monday, November 28, 2016 in which a large amount of prescription drugs and marijuana were confiscated and two non-residents of Wagener were arrested.  Both arrests were direct results of concerned citizens phoning in their concerns about unusual behavior they noticed in their neighborhoods.

WPD Lt. Jeremy Hill and another ACSO Deputy made a second drug-related arrest in Wagener on the following night, November 29, 2016 in which crack cocaine was confiscated as well as other drugs and a 45-automatic pistol.  One of the suspects escaped on foot, leaving his identification behind.  WPD has a search out for this suspect, but is unable to publicize his name at this time.  If you have any information leading to arrest, call 911 and you may be able to collect a reward.

The confiscated quantities of the controlled prescription drugs Xanax and Adderall and the crack cocaine were large enough quantities to charge the suspects with trafficking.

“They have a hard job.”  Mayor Mike Miller said about the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.  “This is a big area to cover from Monetta all the way to Salley and into Windsor and all this area.  They’ve been doing a good job.  The deputies that we have that work this area are familiar to not only the area, but also the people.  The people trust them enough to approach them and tell them what is going on.”  Communication between the community and the police is vital to crime prevention.  If you see anything unusual, call 911 to report it.  Working together, we can make our communities safe.

Coach Earl Seeley Begins 10th Season at WSHS

Wagener Salley High School (WSHS) basketball coach, Earl Seeley begins coaching his tenth season with the War Eagles on the first week of November or as soon as his players are freed up from the football season.  If the football team goes to the playoffs, their schedule will overlap with the basketball season.

Coach Seeley will run try-outs for three days, then make his team.  He usually carries 12 – 15 players.  If some guys are good enough to play, Seeley will stretch the team to 15.

I caught up with Coach Seeley in his office on a hot school day in between his Physical Education classes.  We sat in his office, sandwiched between trophies and photos of former teams and players making spectacular plays, forever preserved on Seeley’s wall of fame.

First, I asked him if, after 35 years in the business, he is thinking about retirement.  Not a bit.  “As long as I have my health,” he said, “I can keep going.  I love coaching.  I love seeing the development of players.  I really love seeing guys after they graduate, and how after I’ve had them for four years, they come back and tell me stories, things I’ve forgotten already.  These guys remember everything.  You think these guys are not listening to you when you are preaching to them, but they’re listening, they hear.”
