Mrs. Virginia Tillison 1932 - 2019

It was with a heavy heart that we heard about the passing of Mrs. Virginia Tillison on Dec. 8, 2019. Her beloved husband, C.D. Tillison passed away in May of this same year. They were together for 67 years and apart just a few months. The Tillisons were active in the community and were known for their attention to culture and beauty. Their marriage endured two house fires and is a classic romantic tale of a country boy who falls in love with a city girl. The town would like to express our deepest condolences to the family for the loss of this wonderful couple. Read more: The romance of CD and Virginia Tillison.

Memorials may be made to the American Stroke Association or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on December 13, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Wagener. The family received friends following the Service in the church sanctuary.

Update: Since the writing of this article, the War Eagles narrowly lost the upper state championship game to Ridge Spring-Monetta. Thus concluded the War Eagles' best season of record. Congratulations to Coach Willie Fox, all assistant coaches and the team.

It’s been an amazing season for the War Eagles. Winning region championship for the second year in a row is a new school record. The undefeated team has won 12 games, the most games WSHS has ever won in a season.

Having won the third round of state playoffs Friday night against Lamar (24 – 12), the War Eagles now play Ridge Spring Monetta at home for the upper state championship. The winner of that game will play for State Champions on December 6, 8:00 pm at Benedict College.

This season’s team has been playing together since age 6, playing for the little league Wagener Wolfpack under the leadership of Coach “Heavy” Swedenburg and Coach “Tiger” Landy. These boys grew up working together as a team with the foundations taught to them at a young age. Coach Willie Fox has been working with them for the past five years and both last year and this year have been the culmination of over a decade of hard work and excellent coaching. Playing together for so long is evident in the way they work together on the field.

Coach Fox corrals the guys into focusing on one game at a time, trying not to think too far down the line, with this little concession when he said, “We have a chance to do something really special if we keep it up.” Fox’s quiet rapport, contained smile and calm demeanor reflects the tamped down excited coach.

Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center and Wagener Medical Clinic Announce Partnership

Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center (ABMHC) and Wagener Medical Clinic are excited to announce their partnership to provide the residents of Wagener and surrounding areas with quick access to quality and effective mental health care in their local community. Beginning November 12, 2019, mental health counselor Nicole Waters will be housed at the Wagener Medical Clinic and will offer an array of mental health services to children, adolescents, and adults.

ABMHC Executive Director Tamara Smith stated, “One in five adults and children in the US experiences mental illness each year. Stigma, lack of affordable treatment, and poor access to mental health care are three of the primary reasons that people do not seek mental health treatment. This partnership allows us to address those barriers in our community. ABMHC’s foundation is built on Recovery and the premise that mental health is essential to overall health. Our goal is to provide safe, effective, and evidence-based mental health care to alleviate symptoms and ensure patients’ best level of functioning. We’re excited to have the opportunity to co-locate with Wagener Medical Clinic and partner with the Town of Wagener.” Wagener Mayor Mike Miller said, “We feel that the addition of mental health services will have a positive impact on our community. I have heard multiple people comment on how much a relief it will be not to travel all the way to Aiken.”

Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center and Wagener Medical Clinic will hold a ribbon cutting on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 120 Louie Street in Wagener at 12:30pm. The public is invited to attend and meet the Mental Health staff.
