Matthew Baugus Charity Golf Tournament

A golf tournament to benefit the Matthew Baugus family, sponsored by the New Holland Fire Department and organized by Dawn and Kevin Richbourg, Greg Rawls and Jessica Baugus will be held on September 29, 2017 at the Hidden Valley Golf Course in Gaston, SC.  Registration is $50 per person or $200 per team and includes green fees, cart and dinner following.  Payment is due by September 1.  Payment information follows.

Matthew Baugus was the beloved husband to Jessica Bodie Baugus and loving father to Shane and Blake.  He was the son of Harold Baugus and Christie Seigler Baugus of Wagener.  Matt was a 2008 graduate of WSHS who enjoyed hunting and fishing and volunteering as a Sergeant with the New Holland Fire Department as the driver of Engine 185.

In March of 2014, Matt was diagnosed with Alveolar soft part Sarcoma cancer in his leg.  His femur bone was removed as well as some tumors on his lungs.  Matt then received chemo and radiation and participated in several trials, all to no avail.

In March of 2017, the cancer had spread drastically and Matt was placed on oxygen 24/7.  Matt passed away peacefully at Aiken Regional surrounded by his family on April 3.

Tournament will be played in Captain’s Choice with 4-person teams.  If you do not enter a team list, you will be placed on a team.  100% of proceeds will go the family of Matthew Baugus for funeral expenses.  Follow the event on Facebook for more information.

If you would like to help sponsor this event, contact Dawn Richbourg at the email listed below.  There are several ways to be a sponsor.

WSHS Students Extra Credit Summer Reading Program

WSHS students can earn extra credit with Summer Reading.

Research has proven that students who do not read during the summer are at risk of losing a month or more of the reading progress they made in school.  With the WSHS Summer Reading Program, students receive the opportunity to earn extra-credit by enjoying reading independently for an extended period of time during the summer months.  In addition to completing the Summer Reading Bingo component of the Summer Reading Extra-Credit Project, students must also complete a journal activity.  Follow the link above for complete details.

A School Board member announced his resignation, and the board approved on first reading revisions and additions to the district's Code of Conduct on Tuesday, May 23 at its regular meeting.

The board also approved service credit for bus drivers.

Ronnie West, who resides in Wagener and represents District 1, will resign effective July 18.  A special election to fill his seat will be August 22.

West read his resignation letter to the board, saying he will "continue my service in the education field in a different capacity."

"I leave with a sense of excitement and dream of things to come and the promise of tomorrow," he said, "I am very excited about this upcoming opportunity in education and the chance to further my career.  I feel we have made many positive changes, and we are headed in the right direction for our schools, faculty and students."

Following a standing ovation and extensive applause from the audience, Board Chairman Levi Green thanked West for his service.  "You have served your area extremely well, and we appreciate what you've done," he said, "We're going to miss you."

District Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford read a quote from West, which he said he shares daily:  "We're not looking for bosses.  We're looking for leaders."

Golf Returns to WSHS

By Valerie Sliker, courtesy Wagener Monthly

For the first time in many years, under the leadership of Coach Parrish Deans and Assistant Coach Dusty Rish, Wagener Salley High School has a Golf Team and has finished second in the region and tenth in the state championship held at Cheraw State Park.

The WSHS golf team began with four and grew to seven players.  While the players are all male, Deans is welcome to female players as well and prefers to keep his team to under 12 players.  In high school golf, many players can play the match, but the coach has to list his top five for the match and then add up the top four for scoring.

The team is very young and Deans is looking forward to many good years with them.  Sophomore Bryson Shealey made all-region and was low man at the region championship.  Seventh grader Trey Romines was our low man at the state.  Freshman Brett Yon had the lowest 9-hole score for the year.  Other players include junior Tanner Turner, eighth grader Justin Widener and seventh graders Jordan Widener and Lance Brown.

The Indian Trail Golf Course serves as host for the WSHS golf team.  Melanie and Michael Hartley have made a lot of improvements on the course and the team enjoys playing there.  Deans and the team are very grateful to the Hartleys for their generosity in letting the team practice daily.  They let the kids practice on the range and chipping green and hold matches out there.  Deans anticipates holding a state championship out there in a year or two.
