Undefeated A.L. Corbett Lions Advance to Semi-Finals

Valerie Sliker
The 2015 A. L. Corbett Lions football team and their coaches have just finished an undefeated district season and will advance to the district semi-finals.  They won the first game in the tournament and will play for the championship at home on the WSHS football field on October 29, 2015 at 6:00 pm.  Let's get a huge crowd out there in support.  Congratulations to the team and coaches for their hard work!

First time head coach Cody O’Brien is happy with his move from Robert Anderson Middle School in Anderson, SC.  O’Brien spent six years as an assistant coach in Anderson and claims the Lions are the best athletes he has ever seen at the middle school level.  “This group has been playing together since they were eight years old,” O’Brien said at a recent practice.  “They know how to play together and they play very well together, like a big family.  Wagener Salley High School, in a couple of years, will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Coach O’Brien admires the humility he sees in Kevin Jackson, a great running back.  O’Brien said, “Usually, with that amount of talent, the player gets a big head.  Not Kevin, he gets more excited when others make a big play rather than when he does.”

The Lions’ starting quarterback Mykell Landy is out due to a broken ankle.  A. J. Sweedenberg has stepped up to the starter quarterback position.  The coaches are relying on A. J. to be able to take snaps.

Other players of note include Weston Williams and Kobe Schofield, both defensive and offensive linemen. Linebacker running back “Ja” Davis has accumulated the most tackles this year.  All three of these players will move on to WSHS next year.

Celtic Legend's Keith Harkin to Perform at Hometown Holiday

Wagener's Hometown Holiday will continue in the Norman Rockwell Small Town USA theme this year by adding our own town square Troubadour.  As notably smalltown-ish a Troubadour often is, this one in particular is not.  Mayor Mike Miller recently announced that Keith Harkin will give a special performance in Wagener during our Hometown Holiday on December 5, 2015.  The concert will be held at 1:30 with a VIP meet and greet at 1:00.  Tickets are sold at Town Hall.  There is a very small charge for tickets.  The VIP tickets cost more.  Call for pricing.  803.564.3412

Keith Harkin, an Irish singer/songwriter, is a principal performer and guitarist for the group Celtic Thunder.  Keith's second solo album, On Mercy Street, will be officially released in January, 2015.  Visit Keith's website to pre-order your copy of On Mercy Street and receive it by December 12, well ahead of the rest of the crowd.  Or come out and hear him on Dec. 5th, maybe he will have some preview copies available for us.

4-H Club Returns to Wagener

A 4-H Club is coming back to Wagener under the leadership of Kelly Patterson and Ethan Busbee.  This is a national youth development program of the Cooperative Extension System of land-grant universities.  All students aged 5 through high school, in public, private or home school, are invited to join this club.

A parents and volunteers meeting will be held September 22, 2015 at the Wagener-Salley High School at 6:30.  Children under 16 should not attend this meeting without a parent or guardian, this is strictly a planning meeting.

The first meeting for students will be held on September 28th.  All meetings will be held at 6:30.  Meetings will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month.  The cost is $10 per student and covers a t-shirt for the student.
